The unique street fashions of Japan or Harajuku for that matter are practically recession-proof. The more you mix and match and pair old with new, the more unique the look. Malls with chain stores and typical season finds are not as fashion forward in some Japanese arenas. The elite trendsetters frequent second hand stores, boutiques, make their own clothes/Jewlry or swap with friends.
Places like Harajuku are almost game for anything.
